How would you rank energy funds BGR, VGENX, FCG?

By Richard C. Young

Don’t forget about the iShares Dow Jones Oil & Gas Exploration and Production Index (IEO), Fidelity Select Natural Gas (FSNGX), and T. Rowe Price New Era (PRNEX), which is mostly energy. If you asked me to pick just one fund, it would be T. Rowe Price New Era. New Era offers broader diversification than the other energy funds on my list as well as active management. For new money, my favored energy fund is the First Trust ISE-Revere Natural Gas Fund (FCG). The fund offers exposure to natural gas stocks including those companies that are active in the big shale plays across the U.S. But FCG shouldn’t be your only energy fund. To get proper diversification, you’ll want to combine it with one of the other energy funds on my list. If you are looking for income, BlackRock Global Energy and Resources (BGR) is your play. The fund writes covered calls to generate additional income. The shares yield 5.57%.
